Many of you may know Wayland Combe Wright and his shop, Camisetas Hikuri. Located just twenty minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport, on the North of the Bay of Banderas in a little fishing village called La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, is HIKURI. It was started in 1993 by three English people, Wayland Combe-Wright, Aruna Piroshki and their daughter Kaerolik, as a bridge between ancient traditions and modern technology - a fund raising venture to support weaving development in the Huichol Sierra. The name, is from the Huichol language - it means peyote - the hallucinogenic cactus that is the sacrament in the Huichol ceremonies, and a central theme to their art. ![]() Wayland Combe Wright, standing above right, along with Diamond Jim Crownhart, Professional Jet Funny Car driver with Diamond Jim Racing seated in the middle, his lovely wife seated on his right and my daughter, Toni with her back to the camera doing homework on a recent trip to Mexico to visit Camisetas Hikuri. ![]() Wayland Combe Wright started the Spinning wheel and sandal workshop. A program of assistance to Huichol weavers aimed at helping the Huichol people maintain and develop their weaving skills -first by facilitating spinning wheels and lately through the production of traditional three-point sandals with beautiful tablet-woven braids. Financially helped by Camisetas Hikuri and COMZAR carpentry. More information on this can be found on the links to the left. |
